About our county of Essex
The county of Essex in situated in the East of England, and is home to Britain’s oldest town Colchester, predating the Roman conquest.
Consisting of fourteen districts/boroughs including: Basildon, Braintree, Brentwood, Castle Point, Chelmsford, Colchester, Epping Forest, Harlow, Maldon, Rochford, Southend on Sea, Tendring, Thurrock and Uttlesford, the M11 and M25 cross the county, and the A12 and A13 trunk roads provide crucial road links to London.
Essex is well served by an extensive public transport network in and out of the capital and throughout the county. Its main airport Stansted, offers convenient Domestic, European and North American flights, whilst the ferry port at Harwich provides valuable sea routes to Europe and beyond.
Industry is predominantly restricted to the south of the county, however much of Essex remains gloriously rural, hiding quaint villages set in stunning countryside, and is edged to the East by one of Britain’s most significant coastlines extending over three hundred miles.
Essex is home to Colchester Castle, the largest Norman keep in Europe,
Mount Fitchet Castle, the only Norman motte and bailey castle in the whole
of the world and Lees Priory, a four hundred and fifty year old Tudor mansion
set within acres of beautiful parkland – this is to mention but a
few of the heritage rich attractions this county has to offer.
